Stewart started a seagoing career with a large Ship Management Company in 1977 serving on general purpose bulk carriers, tankers and container vessels, reaching the rank of Chief Officer. He subsequently became Port Captain where he was responsible for fleet cargo operations, troubleshooting, and casualty investigations. In 1992 he took up an appointment as Marine Surveyor with one of the leading classification societies, based at Fujairah where he conducted various surveys including those of offshore structures. In 1994 he read for and obtained a LLM in Maritime Law at Cardiff University Law School and then became Marine Manager for a fleet of oil and chemical tankers trading world-wide. In this appointment he was responsible for commercial operations including chartering, post fixture and claims administration. Stewart joined MTD in 1999, as a marine consultant and surveyor specialising in petroleum and petrochemical shipments. He also has expertise in charter party and legal disputes concerning general average and demurrage and advises on all aspects of operational ship management.
