Richard has a Masters degree in Chemistry from Oxford University. Prior to joining MTD, Richard gained industry experience working across a wide range of disciplines, including time spent with an international commodities trader, in the claims and placement departments of broking and underwriting firms in the marine insurance industry and with the inspection and laboratory departments of a major independent inspection company.

Since joining MTD in 2005, Richard has been involved in the investigation of numerous cargo quality disputes and claims for a wide range of clients involving a variety of petroleum products, petrochemicals, edible and non-edible oils and fats and biofuels.  He has particular experience in petroleum and chemical contamination claims, bunker disputes, onshore power generation fuel issues, the carriage by sea of biofuel cargos and the application of forensic analytical methods for the investigation of petroleum and petrochemical contaminations.

Richard sits on two industry wide technical committees; the UK P&I Club’s Carefully to Carry Committee and the Energy Institute Hydrocarbon Management Committee HM 68, tasked with writing guidelines for inspectors involved in the measurement of biofuel cargoes.
